Tall Tales for your desktop

As Joseph Herscher said in issue 12, 'Play is the secret of life.'

Erica Harrison's interpretation of the Tall Tales theme captures this sentiment perfectly, and will remind you each time you sit down to your computer that even work should involve a little play!

Dream job: Hand-letterer

In Issue 12's 'When I Grow Up', Carla Hackett talks about creating her own dream job and finding the confidence to get her skills paying the bills. Now you can check out her lettering goodness at the freshly-launched foxglovelettering.com. Carla is currently working on a range of hand-lettered greeting cards, due out in November (and fiancĂ©es out there will be glad to know that Carla loves working on bespoke invitations and chalkboard wedding signage too!)

Here are more photos from the shoot by Sass Cocker (Carla and Sass are both based at Melbourne's Little Gold Studios).

Stockist Series: Space Gallery

Sarah Williams runs Space Studio & Gallery in Whanganui, which has a regular rotation of exhibitions showcasing local artists and also stocks a few carefully curated publications including little old Extra Curricular. We asked Sarah about her creative haven...

What will customers discover at Space?
Space is an Art Gallery & Studio housing a constantly changing and diverse range of artwork made locally in Whanganui. Exhibitions change almost weekly, so you've got to get in quick! We also have 3 studio artists working on site; we are currently in the process of shifting and upgrading our artist studios upstairs to a larger premises, in order for us to house more studio artists and offer larger more varied studios. Our goal to create a hub for the arts in Whanganui.

What's the best thing about coming to work each day?
I still can't believe that this is my job! Some days I have to pinch myself to make sure its real. Coming to work everyday is bliss when you are doing something you really love. I get to work with the most amazing people; Whanganui has such a loving and supportive arts community its great to be a part of it. For me, being able to give emerging artists opportunities is a real privilege.

What is one thing you learnt from starting your business?
To never under-estimate the power of following your dreams – always choose the leap of faith. It's sometimes easy to sit back and watch the world go by, but if you want to do what you love then you have to take risks.

What's the best-kept secret in your local area?

Whanganui is humming with independent business and creative individuals doing awesome things! Places to be are the local farmers market on a Saturday, followed by a coffee at Jolt, pop along to an art opening at Space, then head on out for a night of live music at Space Monster. Just to name a few of our best-kept secrets!
