Contributor series: Sara Savage

Coming up in the next issue, we’ll be running a feature by the multi-talented Sara Savage, who interviews a jeweller moonlighting as a drummer. Sara is a freelance writer and editor and, together with Daphne Shum, runs NO PANTS: a Melbourne based music blog dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the best music made by women all over the world.

Focussing on female (and female-identifying) artists, NO PANTS is an intelligent and funny read. Reviews, interviews and some off-the-cuff recommendations of who’s on their stereo. We’re particularly loving the insightful Mix Tape series. Check it out here.

#9: The Music Issue

Hello there,
My name's Sonya and I'm the guest editor for the next issue of Extra Curricular. Ellie's off swanning about in Europe so I'm holding the reins ‘till she gets back.

I'm going to shake things up a bit with a music feature. In the next issue we’ll be interviewing some amazing musicians, such as Tiny Ruins, Karla Way from Beaches, Eammon from Ghostwave, and Disasteradio to start with. As well as recipes and tutorials, with a musical theme of course.

I’ve written and photographed for Extra Curricular since it’s in inception and have just recently returned to New Zealand after living in Amsterdam and Melbourne for the past 8 years. I balance photography, blogging, jewellery, motherhood and now a guest editorship from Auckland. Life is rather frantic but it’s good to be back home in NZ. I'm so excited to be working on the next issue of my favourite mag.

I'll be guest blogging here for the next month or so, and introducing some of our amazing contributors who make the mag possible. I hope you enjoy it.

Double Talk

Continuing along the theme of exhibitions and past interviewees, Robert Sly has new work and an exhibition at Monster Valley in Auckland opening tonight – details in the poster below. He says there are no tricks involved in the technique - it's just watercolour. But he must have a super steady hand to create those precise geometric shapes which seem to float in space on their watery backgrounds. Below is just a taster of what's in the show... head along to Dominion Road to check out the rest (tonight at the opening, or until August 7th by appointment).

40 Winks

Angela Keoghan featured in our illustration issue a while back. Since then she has been busy rolling out more great work - winning a merit award in the annual illustration competition run by 3x3 Magazine and now taking part in an exhibition in Hamilton called 40 Winks. Organised by Draw Inc, it features illustrators from Hamilton and Tauranga and runs until the 21st (Draw Inc looks like a great addition to Hamilton's creative landscape - a gallery that keeps moving around the city!) More details are on the poster below.

Angela's charming illustrations tell magical stories using beautiful textures and colours. I love the way she plays with scale. She has kindly sent a few images from the series she created for the exhibition and some pictures from the opening. I always find it fascinating to hear how an artist came up with a concept, and she says, 'My work was inspired by the Frozen Planet series and a folk tale called 'The Hunter and the Polar Bear' - a story about a hunter who is not very good at hunting until he helps heal a wounded polar bear. The 10 legged polar bear is a mythical creature from Inuit tales'.

The poster below features work by Angela and Gary Venn, who did some wonderful pencil illustrations for the show. Go and see the work in person if you're in Hamilton, or if you're not, you can still have a nose around at The Picture Garden.
